XD13 HELP: IRC Chat

Chat Information:

The embedded chats on the XD13 Network is an IRC based chat powered by GeekShed. To join the chat, simply enter a nickname in the name field, and your password if you are registered ON GEEKSHED. If you are not registered, or do not wish to, you do not need to worry about a password, just leave it blank. Although, if you want to keep your nickname, it is recommended that you register on Geekshed.  It is important to note that just because you registered on the XD13 Network, you are not registered on the GeekShed Live Chat.

How to register:

It is very easy to register to a GeekShed IRC. Once you are in a chatroom, go up to options, and click register nickname. It will ask for an email and a password. Once you enter this information, check your email, type in the confirmation message, and you are registered (You do not need to be registered on the XD13 Network to register on GeekShed).

If you are using an IRC client such as mIRC or xchat, then type:

/msg NickServ REGISTER password [email]
e.g. /msg NickServ Register verysecretpassword email@blah.com

You can also do this in the flash based client on the site

The Rules:

  1. To enter the room, simply type in any user name. A password is not needed unless you register to the channel
  2. Respect everyone inside
  3. Keep the language clean
  4. Do not flood
  5. Do not repeat yourself over and over again
  6. Do not spam links or youtube videos unless they are relevant to the conversation at hand
  7. It is recommended that you don’t give out personal information
  8. It is recommended that you don’t receive any files
  9. Keep the topic clean
  10. Treat others like you want to be treated
  11. In addition to these rules, please view the rules from GeekShed, the IRC host: http://www.geekshed.net/tos/
  12. Failure to follow these rules means either a kick from the rule, or even a ban.
  13. If you are banned, don’t expect to return
  14. Don’t be annoying

What do the symbols next to the names mean?

~ means the owner of the channel. He is in charge of everything

@ is an op, or moderator

& is a bot. Don’t bother messaging these guys, they don’t do anything except watch over the chat.

% is a halfop. They are moderators, but not a powerful as full ops.

+means that the user is voiced, that is, they have the trust of the ops not to say anything stupid. They are allowed to talk when the chat is moderated (+m). Do not ask for voice. You’ll get it eventually if you earn the trust of the ops.

Some Commands:

JOINING THE XD13 NETWORK

Registering to the XD13 Network is very easy.  Go to any XD13 site, and click the REGISTER button.  This can be found at the top of this page, or by hovering over the little person icon in the lower left corner, and click the “REGISTER” button.

You will then be asked for your email (Please make sure it is correct) and a user name (you CAN NOT change your user name once you register).  Your user name is what you login with (Not to be confused with a nickname, which is explained here).

Once you enter your username and email, enter the math equation (to prevent spam), and hit next.  A confirmation email will be sent to the email you entered (it may take some time for it to show up).  When it does, it will contain a password.  Return to any XD13 site, enter your user name and password provided in the email, and you are in.

If you do not see a confirmation email after several hours, click here.

The next step would probably changing your password to something you can remember.  For more information on this, check the YOUR PROFILE page.

XD13 Help: Finding the image URL / Inserting a Picture.

XD13 Sites that allow users to write guest posts have one problem:  They can NOT upload pictures directly to the site.  I have no idea why, they just can’t.  Therefore, images must be hosted elsewhere.  Here is how to do that:

1. Get a site that is able to upload pictures.  These can include, but are not limited to: Photobucket, Twitpic, YFrog, Facebook, ImageShack, mySpace, Flickr, your WordPress site, etc.

2.  Get the URL to the image.  This can be done several ways depending on the browser/image hosting site you choose.  If you use photobucket, on the image, you want to copy the “Direct Link.”  For most other sites, it is not easy to get the direct link using the site itself.  That’s where your browser comes in.

Firefox:  Right click on the image, click copy image location; OR click view image, and copy the address from the address bar at the top

Internet Explorer 9: Right click on the image, click properties, copy the Address (URL)

3.  If you were just trying to get the URL of a image (Which can be needed Spiritual Blogs, or Spritebase) you are done once you paste it in.  If you are trying to put it into a post, simply hit the “Add an Image” button to the left of "Upload/Insert” below the post title, and above the editor.  Click the “From URL” Tab, and paste the Image URL in the image URL field.  Add a title to it as well.  Everything else is optional.  Alternate Text appears if the image is not available; Image caption adds a caption to the image; Alignment makes you align the image; and the Link to image field makes you link to whatever the URL is when the image is clicked on.   Usually, the “Link to image” button is clicked to do this.  When you insert it (in the visual editor, it will show up), you can resize it by moving the little white squares in the corners and at the midpoints of the image when you click on it.  Also, when you click on the image, two small images appear in a corner.  The red circle with a line through it deletes the picture; the other one brings up options of a picture.  Resizing and various other options can be found here.

If you know HTML, you can also insert a picture by using the HTML tab on the editor (The code is <img src="ImageURL" width="Number" height="Number">)

XD13 Help: Commenting

How to comment:

Commenting on the XD13 Network is pretty simple.  But there are some things you need to do.  You either need to be logged in to the XD13 Network to comment (easiest thing to do) or provide information.  If you are logged in, simply type the comment in the comment box, solve the math equation at the bottom (to prevent spam), and click comment.  You are done, you commented!  If you want to reply to a comment, simply go to the comment you want to reply to, and click “reply” and do the same thing.

If you are not logged in, you can either connect with Twitter or Facebook to post a comment (without filling out any fields), or you can fill out the Name, Email address, Website, and comment fields.  In these fields, the name is what your name appears as, the email address is not posted, the website is optional (you can post your personal website if you choose), and the comment is where your comment goes.  The last step is to solve the math equation, and click the submit button.

If you registered to the XD13 Network, you do NOT have to solve the math equation.

Rating/Reporting:

You can rate comments too.  Near comments are a thumbs up and thumbs down button.  You can uprate or downvote comments.  In addition, there is a report button too in case there’s something inappropriate going on.

Approval:

When you make your first comment on the XD13 network, it will have to be approved.  Every comment after that will no longer be, unless it has links in it.
